Plan a Summer Getaway at Johnny's Hideaway

Johnny’s Hideaway has been guaranteeing good times since 1979, and this storied nightclub is a must-see attraction in Atlanta. Well-known for its ability to appeal to both the over-40 crowd and the 20- and 30-somethings about town, Johnny’s is a welcoming destination with a week’s worth of fun for visitors landing in the ATL over summer break. The packed dance floor, the familiarity of “Cheers,” the retro lounge décor and the musical memorabilia are just a few of the reasons Johnny’s is a Southeastern destination, and it can take a full week to experience all that the nightlife institution has to offer.

Seven days of summer break at Johnny’s Hideaway looks a little something like this:

  • Monday: Ease into vacation mode with Trivia Night at Johnny’s. Starting at 7:30 p.m., guests can substitute thinking caps for dancing shoes and test their knowledge of current events, movies, sports and more. Local’s tip: check Instagram for secret trivia clues each week and put those dancing shoes back on at 9 p.m. when the DJ starts spinning.

  • Tuesday: Order a Philly cheesesteak sandwich with a side of tater tots (Johnny’s most-ordered item) and do some day drinking. Guests often forget there is a kitchen at Johnny’s, but the menu features a wide assortment of starters, salads, sandwiches and more. Afternoon visits to Johnny’s also offer a great opportunity to see longtime regulars who have formed a lunch bunch and gather regularly on weekdays.

  • Wednesday: Wednesday is Ladies Night, and gals can enjoy a free drink from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Additionally, all Ketel One cocktails are $8 the entire night. It’s no secret that the mixed drinks are stronger than average at Johnny’s, and the no-fuss beverage offerings are served at warp speed. The team behind the bar has service down to a science.

  • Thursday: Thirsty Thursday calls for a vodka Red Bull (the most popular drink to order at Johnny’s). With a drink in hand, it is time to pay a visit to The King’s Corner, a tribute to Elvis, and The Sinatra Room, which features memorabilia dedicated to Ol’ Blue Eyes. Johnny’s offers a healthy dose of nostalgia around every corner.

  • Friday: Show off moves on the dance floor, where DJ Spencer Pearson spins irresistible tunes that are guaranteed to get guests grooving—think 80s hits, old school funk and disco. Keep an ear out for the club’s most requested songs: “Dancing Queen” by ABBA and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston.

  • Saturday: Johnny’s often attracts lines of up to 100 guests, especially on the weekends, but arriving early has its perks: Johnny’s will reserve a table for guests until 8:30 p.m. Another perk to arriving early is seeing talented dancers show off their skills before the younger crowds arrive. Johnny’s was originally a shag, swing and ballroom dance club, and it’s a special treat to witness couples with fancy footwork from eras gone by.

  • Sunday: Grab a seat at the bar to people watch and chat up one of the veteran bartenders. The staff at Johnny’s, many of whom have been employed there for more than 20 years, are the best in the business and one of the top reasons guests grow to love the nightclub. One of the club’s legendary regulars, many of whom have a designated barstool, is likely to be sitting nearby.
